Where Is Darbo Jam From? The Austrian Family Story

Darbo is an Austrian family company based in Stans, Tyrol, with roots in fruit preserving that go back to 1879.

How did Darbo begin?

According to Darbo’s company history, the family began making jams, syrups and fruit liqueurs in 1879 in Görz, then an Austrian city. After the factory suffered serious damage during World War I, the family relocated to Stans in Tyrol and rebuilt the business around jam production and honey bottling.

Tourism helped introduce the products to more people. A new factory followed in the 1950s, and another opened in Stans in 1993 as the company expanded into markets abroad. Darbo remains a family business today.

What should you look for when choosing a Darbo jar?

Start with the exact product name, rather than assuming every Darbo spread has the same recipe. The producer’s jam range overview separates several lines, including All Natural, Double-Fruit and 80% fruit products. A percentage shown for one range does not describe every jar carrying the brand.

European Deli lists both D’Arbo Raspberry Fruit Spread and D’Arbo Wild Lingonberries Fruit Spread with Austria as their country of origin. When comparing them, use the label on your particular jar for its ingredients, fruit content and storage directions. Product names and pack sizes can differ between markets.

How can you compare two fruit spreads at home?

A small tasting makes choosing easier than reading a long list of flavor descriptions. You do not need to prepare a full breakfast buffet:

  1. Keep the bread the same. Cut a plain roll or a slice of bread into several pieces so the topping is the main difference.
  2. Taste a little of each spread first. Notice the fruit aroma, sweetness, tang and texture before adding butter or another topping.
  3. Try each one the way you plan to eat it. If your usual breakfast is buttered toast, compare both on buttered toast. If it is yogurt, stir a small spoonful into separate portions of plain yogurt.
  4. Choose for the occasion. Your favorite on bread may be different from your favorite beside cheese or spooned over a simple dessert. Treat those pairings as experiments and start with a small amount.

What else do shoppers ask about Darbo?

Is Darbo an Austrian or German brand?

Darbo is Austrian. Its company address is in Stans, Tyrol.

Does Austrian production mean all the fruit is Austrian?

No. Darbo describes sourcing fruit from growing regions around the world. A jar’s country of origin should not be read as a promise that every fruit ingredient was grown there.

Are all Darbo fruit spreads seedless?

Do not assume so. Look for an explicit seedless or strained description on the particular product if a smooth texture matters to you.
