Teekanne: The German Tea Pioneer Since 1882
A cup of tea can feel timeless, but the way most of us prepare it is surprisingly modern. Teekanne helped shape that ritual. From carefully blended loose tea to practical portions and early tea-bag machinery, the German family business repeatedly found ways to make a consistent cup easier to enjoy.
From Dresden beginnings to a protected brand
The story begins in Dresden in 1882 with the founding of R. Seelig & Hille. In 1888, the word and image “TEEKANNE” were legally protected, making it one of Germany’s oldest registered trademarks.
Rudolf Anders and Eugen Nisslé brought an important innovation in 1892: blended tea packed and sold in tins. Blending allowed the company to maintain a recognizable flavor even when individual harvests varied. The two men took over the business in 1898, and Teekanne has remained connected to their families ever since.
How Teekanne helped reinvent the tea bag
During World War I, Teekanne supplied portioned tea in small gauze bags—an early predecessor of the modern infusion bag. The larger breakthrough arrived in 1928, when company engineer Adolf Rambold developed the Pompadour machine, described by Teekanne as the world’s first fully automatic tea-bag packing machine.
Later equipment increased speed and helped popularize individually portioned tea internationally. That mix of tea expertise and packaging ingenuity became central to the brand’s identity.
A German tea ritual for every season
Teekanne’s range makes it easy to match a blend to the moment. Peppermint and chamomile suit a quiet evening. Ginger-lemon offers a bright, warming cup. Fruit teas can be served hot in winter or chilled in warmer weather, while Glühfix brings the spiced aroma of a Christmas market to mulled wine or punch.

Why the Teekanne story still matters
Teekanne’s history is not only a story about tea leaves. It is about turning a daily pleasure into a reliable ritual—through blending, portioning and a long run of practical inventions. Read the complete timeline on Teekanne’s official history page.
