Dallmayr: Munich’s Historic Coffee and Delicatessen
Dallmayr coffee carries the atmosphere of Munich with it: polished tradition, careful sourcing and the pleasure of taking time over something well made. Yet coffee is only one chapter in a business whose roots stretch back more than 300 years.
A Munich trading house with a long memory
The earliest record of the business that would become Dallmayr dates to around 1700, when Munich merchant Christian Reitter operated a trading shop. The store received its present name in 1870 from owner Alois Dallmayr.
In 1895, Alois Dallmayr sold the business to Anton Randlkofer. After Anton’s death two years later, Therese Randlkofer took the lead—an exceptional position for a woman in business at the time. Under her direction, the house developed into a premier delicatessen and became a supplier to royal courts.
From delicatessen counters to celebrated coffee
The Munich flagship became known for carefully chosen foods and an elegant shopping experience. Coffee roasting later grew into one of the company’s defining specialties.
Dallmayr Prodomo is the name many coffee drinkers recognize first. The aromatic blend is associated with selected highland arabica beans and a balanced cup designed for traditional German filter preparation. The wider range now includes whole-bean, decaffeinated, instant and limited-edition coffees.
How to enjoy Dallmayr coffee at home
For classic Prodomo, use a drip brewer or pour-over and begin with roughly two level tablespoons of ground coffee per six ounces of water, adjusting to taste. Serve it with milk or cream if desired, but try the first sip black to appreciate its aroma.
Pair the coffee with a restrained German sweet: butter biscuits, marble cake, stollen or a slice of apple cake. Shop Dallmayr coffee at European Deli for ground, whole-bean and specialty options.
Why Dallmayr remains a Munich landmark
Dallmayr joins the intimacy of a specialty food shop with the reach of a major coffee name. Its identity still rests on the same promise that built the historic delicatessen: select carefully, present beautifully and make everyday enjoyment feel special.
