From Lübeck With Love: The Story of Niederegger Marzipan

For more than two centuries, the name Niederegger has been inseparable from Lübeck and fine marzipan. What began as one pastry chef’s confectionery in 1806 became a family tradition recognized around the world.

A CONFECTIONERY FOUNDED IN 1806

Johann Georg Niederegger established the company in Lübeck in 1806 after taking over the confectionery where he had trained. In 1822, he acquired the premises on Breite Strasse, opposite the steps of Lübeck’s historic town hall. The location became a landmark for travelers, local families and generations of marzipan lovers.

FROM LÜBECK TO ROYAL COURTS

Niederegger’s reputation soon traveled far beyond northern Germany. The confectionery supplied the Russian imperial court and earned international recognition, including honors at the Vienna World Exhibition. The name became shorthand for Lübeck marzipan made with care, skill and exceptional almonds.

CRAFTSMANSHIP AT THE CENTER

Historic workshop photographs show confectioners shaping and finishing marzipan by hand. That attention to detail helped transform a simple almond-and-sugar confection into a Lübeck specialty—and it remains

central to the house’s identity today.

WHAT MAKES NIEDEREGGER MARZIPAN DISTINCTIVE?

Niederegger emphasizes a high proportion of carefully selected almonds and avoids unnecessary added sugar. The result is a rich, aromatic marzipan with a clear almond flavor and a smooth, tender texture. It is the kind of confection that feels equally at home beside an afternoon coffee, tucked into a stocking or presented as a holiday gift.

A TRADITION THAT STILL FEELS NEW

Today, the assortment reaches from classic marzipan loaves and elegant gift boxes to seasonal specialties and playful new flavors. Our latest arrival includes familiar favorites alongside Blueberry Butter Cake and Pistachio Tiramisu—a community-selected 2026 Classic of the Year.
