The history of incense candles is not exactly known. A very plausible version goes back to the reformation of the catholic church by Martin Luther. The burning of incense in the church was used as a ritual to drive away evil spirits but also unpleasant odors. It was also found that incense had an antiseptic and circulation promoting effect. In the protestant church this ritual was not allowed.

The production of incense candles is attributed to the silver mining in the Erzgebirge. The miners in this region blessed their work equipment and themselves with incense before starting work or entering the pit in order to be protected from danger while working. For many generations it had been the custom of the miners to take self-made incense candles underground into the mine. After the decline of silver mining in the Erzgebirge, people looked for other sources of income. Thus, they found a valuable raw material in the abundant wood of the Erzgebirge forests, from which many practical household aids, toys and especially decorative articles such as Christmas pyramids, candle arches (called “Schwibbogen”) and smoking figures were made. This is the origin of the Erzgebirge Christmas tradition.

The traditional costume with the smoker's bollen hat comes from the three Protestant communities of Gutach, Kirnbach and Reichenbach in the Kinzig Valley in the Black Forest. It is a church costume of the Protestant enclave to distinguish it from its Catholic surroundings. The girls wear the hat with the glowing red wool balls for the first time during their confirmation; then on all ceremonial occasions until the wedding. When the women are married, they wear a black bollen hat. Two ribbons, tied under the chin, ensure that the hat with its 11 wool roses fits correctly. In addition to the striking hat, the costume includes a white shirt with puff sleeves, a black camisole with woven flowers and finally the chobe, a short black silk jacket and a calf-length skirt.

In the past, gingerbread women always had a wonderful smell of fresh pastries on their arduous journey when they carried their goods from the Erzgebirge to the Christmas markets. A wonderful smoker from the series of traditional Christmas market women made of 46 individual pieces of ash, beech and lime wood.

The wooden toy making trade in Seiffen is almost 300 years old. The numerous works of art made of wood are mainly offered at Christmas markets: Christmas pyramids, incense smokers, candle arches and play figures from the Ore Mountains.
