He served John II of Portugal as an adviser in matters of navigation and participated in a voyage to West Africa. Numerous myths and legends surround this legend. Behaim's "Erdapfel" (German for "earth apple""), created between 1491 and 1493, is the oldest surviving terrestrial globe and is depicted on this beautiful storied tin.
